20001

It is no accident that the title of Stefan Hoderlein’s work recalls Stanley Kubrick’s film “2001: A Space Odyssey”: The installation, too, is reminiscent of a psychedelic storm of images in a distant galaxy, for which the artist arranged 20,000 backlighted slides. Grouped in 23 blocks of 730 pictures each, they flank the Hofgartenrampe, an underpass between Kunstakademie/Tonhalle and Hofgarten. The individual images come from the artist’s archive, which comprises videos, film, advertising, magazines and relics of the music scene as well as own photographs. In this work, though, the individual image dissolves; what’s left is an atmospheric stream of images, a rhythm that echoes the artist’s intention to translate the rave lifestyle into art.

“20001” was created as part of the “Hell-Gruen” (Bright-Green) art project for the Euroga 2002 and is the only surviving contribution.
