5 Arcs x 5
The steel sculpture in front of the Duisburg Theater belongs to French artist Bernar Venet’s group of works entitled Arcs. Its rhythmic structure makes reference to the location, as both theater and musical works are often built on similar principals. The sculpture is made up of 25 square steel rods that have been bent into open, partial circles with equal diameters. These individual elements have then been arranged into groups of five with each circle’s opening in a different location.
This design results in a rhythm of five “acts” or “phrases,” creating an internal structure with different crescendos and decrescendos. With its reduced formal language and materiality, the sculpture forms a counterpoint to the surrounding buildings, while still significantly contributing to the structuring and spatial situation.
