Abnehmende Aussicht / Diminishing View

Whether it be birdhouses, mailboxes, or simple storage containers, signal red boxes seem to fascinate Bogomir Ecker. Sculptural, serial, detached from their original function and enigmatic, these boxes can be found in a number of his installations. In this work, signal red dummy surveillance cameras are mounted atop a row of five operational streetlights. They are situated between the dirt road and the adjacent slope, as if they were monitoring the stream.
The stream itself is straight and narrow, and appears to have no peculiarities or secrets. An equally unremarkable bridge crosses over the trench nearby. This bridge is the perfect vantage point to observe the surreal scene presented here and wonder why this few meters of land is so important that it must be well-lit at night and continuously monitored. The observer is now observing observation, becoming part of the sculptural composition, and expanding upon the absurdity of its content.
