Aliud

“Aliud,” Latin for “something else,” hovers freely on a steal beam between to buildings and is over 22 meters high. On the ground, the sculpture has a cubic base with a cylindrical attachment that indicates its connection to rest of the sculpture. The hanging section is also made up of cylindrical segments, creating a long vertical structure that ends with two cubic pieces and one tube-shaped segment at the top. Circular holes at irregular intervals give life to the abstract, painted yellow forms.
The slight misalignment of individual segments gives the impression that the vertical column is refracted as if it were an image reflected on the water, evoking a visual connection to the water in the harbor basin. The cubic elements, on the other hand, take on the formal language of the surrounding buildings, so that the sculpture simultaneously reflects the characteristics of its surroundings, while also becoming its own distinct feature of the location.
Bogomir Ecker was awarded the “mfi-Preis für Kunst am Bau“ for this sculpture in 2012.
