Anröchter Dolomite
Like many of Ulrich Rückriem’s sculptures, this work is made of a monolithic block of stone that was cut into several pieces, processed, and then put back together into it’s original form as it came from the quarry. This stone was divided into four parts, so that a horizontal rectangular stone forms the base, supporting the three remaining vertical rectangular stones. One side of the middle stone was removed and the underlying surface was smoothed. In turn, it forms a recess between the two adjacent pieces, making them look like pillars around the resulting niche. On the back of the formation, however, the original continuous structure of the stone is still visible and the division of the block can only be seen in the cuts: “The material, its form, its unique properties and dimensions influence and restrict my creative activity. Work processes must be recognizable and may not be blurred by what is done afterward. How I manipulate the material determines the object itself and its relationship to the new location.”
This sculpture was donated by the Kunst- und Museumsverein with the support of the Wuppertaler Lions und Rotarier for the Skulpturenpark Johannisberg.
