Auf der Lichtung / On the Glade
Although he often used found objects to create multi-part assemblages in his earlier works, Tony Cragg later turned to more traditional mediums like bronze. Nonetheless, the resulting sculptures are neither figurative, nor static, but look like the physical manifestation of a spinning movement frozen in space.
The bronze sculpture On the Glade comprises three parts that appear to be randomly arranged in the middle of the square without a pedestal. One of the shapes stands upright and is reminiscent of a soft clay vase with irregular curves. Lying beside it on the ground, the second object is almost spindle-shaped. The third form stands at an angle and also features irregular curvature, but looks a bit more compacted and compressed.
None of the elements represent a natural model or a geometrically abstract form. In their strangeness, they give the solid material a unique fluid character; they seem to illustrate a gap that is otherwise invisible to the human eye.
