Bergkamen setzt Maßstäbe / Bergkamen Sets Standards
The Bergkamen city center can be “experienced” through four centrally located traffic circles. Maik and Dirk Löbbert created an imaginary connection between these sites by installing illuminated poles at the center of each circle. The poles are slanted at such an angle that, if extended further, they meet above the Marktplatz and form a sort of roof over the city.
The poles are ten meters long and divided into one-meter segments, with alternating colored and white segments. This pattern makes each pole resemble the scale at the bottom of a map or a raised tollgate. In this way, the installation takes the idea of historic city gates and brings it into the present: rather than separating the city from the outside world, it is now more important that they be open and unifying.
