Ferdinand Spindel’s work is characterized by soft organic forms and warm colors. The artist prefers to work with foam, which he binds, distorts, and colors to create sculptures, as well as entire cavernous environments.
Although concrete is an atypical material for him, Spindel has managed to transform it here to represent his own particular artistic approach. Supported by three metal feet, the massive concrete wall is over eight meters long. With its gently undulating surface, the sculpture is reminiscent of a landscape made up of sand dunes. The corners and edges are rounded and irregular, which enhances the soft and organic look of the work. Weather conditions have also had an impact on the sculpture, giving it the impression of natural stone or earth formations.
Located at the Wittener Friedhof, this sculpture echoes the rectangular shapes of the gravestones; nonetheless, the massive concrete wall doesn’t have a cold and off-putting effect, but instead seems warm and welcoming like a comforting pillow.
