Bildstock / Wayside Shrine
Thomas Klegin’s Wayside Shrine is installed in a central square where several paths intersect. The title and location make reference to the small traditional monuments that typically feature a pedestal with a religious image on top and offer a moment of contemplation in every day life. However, this shrine is made out of a metal pole with eleven traffic mirrors of different sizes and positioning.
Motorists are familiar with these types of mirrors, which are designed to enable them to see in traffic situations with limited visibility and draw attention to potential dangers. The large quantity of mirrors and their positioning in this installation is disorienting, forcing the viewer to stop and take a closer look at them. In this way, you are invited to consider their reflections of yourself and your surroundings.
In the figurative sense, the installation offers something similar to a traditional shrine: reflection, orientation, ideas about which path to take, a moment of contemplation. Without the religious context, viewers are referred back to themselves in these considerations.
