Bodenflügel / Ground Wings
This two-part sculpture establishes a connection between the city center and Hertener Schlosspark. Based on the basic concept of zipper merging, it brings together the city’s two central axes meet at Otto-Wels-Platz. The Ground Wings are designed to match the surrounding pavement. The two elongated rectangles start out embedded in the pavement like inlays and then rise in a gentle curve to a height of around 60 cm. They form the stage for a variety of activities: a water feature draws the attention of passersby and encourages children to splash around; the edges and surfaces present themselves for use as seats, play spaces, lounge areas, and balance beams. As the artist explains on her website: “The sculpture symbolizes communication between areas of the city and simultaneously provides a space for exchange and entertainment.”
