Cold Spot

The German artist Tom Fecht’s ground installation “Cold Spot” is part of an international project entitled “Names and Stones” which was realised at numerous sites. The first installation took place at documenta IX in Kassel in 1992. Since then, memorial installations of more than 2,300 name stones were realised in over 26 cities in Germany and Europe. The installation consists of square paving made of old cobblestones on which are engraved the names of prominent persons and citizens of Hagen who died of AIDS. The rectangle sunk into the ground in front of the historic Folkwang building consists of 65 engraved and 100 unengraved stones. Originally, the work was integrated into the architecture of the museum as the “Kalte Tor” (Cold Gate) from 1993. Because of a museum extension, the work, based on a concept of the artist, was changed into the “Cold Spot” on 26 November 2007. The new site is next to the reconstructed main staircase of the historic Folkwang building (Osthaus Museum).
