Columne pro Caelo
The heavenly pillar is an ancient mythological concept that can be found across different cultures. It typically supports the heavens or takes the form of the tree of life, an axis around which the celestial bodies rotate. Heinz Mack’s Columne pro Caelo evokes such interpretations of the universe. The sculpture is a granite pillar with grooves along the top, largely drawing its effect from the play of light and shadow. Reaching upward toward the heavens, it could represent a relic from a prehistoric culture in which the sun played a central role.
In its location on the Cologne Domplatte, it has been placed in dialogue with the Römisch-Germanisches Museum on one side and the cathedral on the other. As a result, it is positioned directly within the context of the different mythologies that man has used to try to explain the world. It manages to reshape the public space by creating a triangular formation with these two prominent nearby buildings.
