concrete erection, La Plate-bande No 2

As if a curb suddenly felt summoned to a higher calling, Francois Morellet’s humorous and yet abstract and precisely constructed work surprises viewers in the park at Haus Weitmar. Using strips of concrete, the artist has outlined the four right angles formed at the intersection of two park paths. But one of these angles seems to have stepped out of line: it abruptly rises from the ground and points upward, “dog-earing” the spot with a ca. three-meter high angle.
In this way, the vertical and horizontal planes seem to penetrate each other, redefining the space. When the KUBUS building was first constructed at Situation Kunst, Morellet donated the design for the sculpture, which had already been realized once before in the sculpture garden at the Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo in 1987/88. He also donated his work Neons by accident (16 arcs de cercle), which was already part of the permanent collection.
