Cross Section of a Toothbrush with Paste in a Cup on a Sink: Portrait of Coosje’s Thinking
This work in front of Haus Esters is titled to encourage viewers to try and find a second level of meaning in the sculpture, while also paying homage to the artist’s longtime creative partner and wife. He and Coosje van Bruggen have been creating works of art together out of monumentalized and decontextualized everyday objects since the mid 1970s. Originally planned for a site in Hartford Connecticut, the toothbrush takes on a new context in front of the museum building, which was formerly a factory owner’s villa. As an everyday object, it reminds viewers of the daily life that took place there in the past. As a sculpture, it draws attention to the building’s current function as an exhibition space. The sculpture was donated to the Krefelder Kunstmuseen in 1983 for the centennial of the Krefelder Kunstverein by its members and the Siempelkamp Gießerei.
