Monument to a Formerly Site-Specific Sculpture

In 1997, Maik and Dirk Löbbert installed their work Beleuchtung / Lighting on Hüsingstraße as part of the sculpture mile. The street featured a combination of old and new architecture and design, including the historic street lamp that was used as the starting point for their artistic intervention.
The artists placed a modern whip lamppost (which has been a typical style of street lighting since the 70s) beside the smaller existing historic one, so that the new installation became the dominant source of light in that location. Despite its almost casual ease, the resulting situation was not only surreal and absurd, but also encouraged viewers to consider the historical consciousness, how the formal language of architecture and design has changed over time, and how urban space is formed.
When Hüsingstraße was redesigned in 2004, the sculpture had to be moved from its original location and the artists agreed to relocate it to the Stadtpark. There, as a Monument to a Formerly Site-Specific Sculpture, it serves an additional purpose as a memorial to the changing history of numerous works of art in public spaces.
