Diaspora

Located in the Jewish cemetery, Israeli artist Dan Richter-Levin’s sculpture is distantly reminiscent of a fragmented Star of David, making reference to the diaspora of Judaism. After his 1994 wood sculpture had weathered over time, the artist made this structure out of welded metal rods and tubes seven years later.
The basic theme behind his work is the frame as a formal element that defines, restricts, opens, and connects spaces. Still, frames also contain a more symbolic meaning: political, social, and cultural “frameworks” restrict our perception, but also offer protection and security. By combining the different types of frames into an extensive interwoven construction, it points out the variety of possible viewpoints and perspectives.
