Die Kraft des Wachstums (Stele) / The Power of Growth (Stele)
This early work by Heinz Mack was created in 1954 after he finished his studies, and even before the founding of the Zero artist group. Mack repeatedly returns to the basic form of the stepped stele throughout his oeuvre, making this sculpture a particularly good starting point for understanding his work. The plant-based origin of the form – buds from leaves or flowers – is still recognizable here and is used as a symbol of strong growth.
References to the surrounding nature and his particular appreciation of it remain evident in his later more abstract geometric works. The form of the stepped stele is known for being particularly suited to catching the light, reflecting it, and generating a constantly changing image as the lighting conditions change.
