Die Liegende / Reclining Figure

Karl J. Dierkes’ Liegende / Reclining Figure is closely aligned with the contemporary abstract style of the time, which was most popularized by British sculptor Henry Moore. In this work, the human body is broken down into abstract forms, so that it remains recognizable, while also being reminiscent of a landscape or any other organic form. The oversized bronze figure’s abdomen and legs rest firmly on the pedestal, while the upper body appears to be gently propped up on its elbows, as if the Liegende / Reclining Figure were resting on an invisible surface in a typical “beach posture.” The neck and head are merged in an elongated form. All in all, the figure seems to be indifferently observing her surroundings in a casually relaxed posture. Although it was not specifically designed with the context of the hospital in mind, it appears to pleasantly interact with its surroundings. In 1970 it was purchased as a Kunst am Bau installation for the extension of the Warburger Klinik. However, this extension was demolished along with the old hospital in 2014 and the statue was given a temporary space Hüffertstraße. It will receive a new location as part of the new design of the park at Helios-Klinikum.
