Deutz Buck

Cologne-based sculptor Gerhard Marcks created the Deutz Buck in 1963 on behalf of the city of Cologne. It was intended as a symbol for the members of the annual carnival, as well as the local marksmen from Deutz. Since it’s unveiling, it has also become an emblem of the district. This particular animal comes from a legend involving a neighborhood dispute between a tailor and a tax collector that was won by the tax collector with the help of a billy goat.
With this work, Gerhard Marcks returned to his beginnings as an animal sculptor. At the start of his career, he first gained recognition for his reduced but lifelike animal figures. Situated in a rectangular water basin, this statue is enthroned atop a column with a cushion capital. The Deutz Buck is a naturalistic depiction that seems to capture the essence of the typical billy goat in a highly simplified form.
