Unit of Three Equal Volumes

In his introduction to the catalogue for the 1949 exhibition Züricher konkrete Kunst, Max Bill explained that:
“The goal of concrete art is to develop objects for mental use, the same way people make objects for material use. (…) concrete art, as a final consequence, is the pure expression of harmonious measure and law. It orders systems and gives life to the order through artistic means.”
This view is reflected in his entire sculptural oeuvre, including this work. Three elongated, interlocking bars support each other and create an upwards-reaching formation. The shiny polished surface reflects the surroundings and their changing colors and light, which makes it look less like a mass that is subjected to gravity, and more like an intangible-intellectual construct in the form of a strictly geometrical structure.
