Feuille se reposant (Resting Leaf)

Hans Arp was one of the most important representatives of Dadaism in the time after World War I, primarily as a writer, painter, and draftsman. It wasn’t until after 1931 that he devoted himself to sculpture, which later became the main focus of his work. As a sculptor, he created abstract, organic forms that drew from nature. However, that did not mean imitating natural models, but instead had to do with how forms were shaped.
His sculptures incorporate soft forms that develop naturally in concave and convex curves, openings, and outgrowths, giving particular importance to the principle of metamorphosis. This can also be seen in the sculpture Resting Leaf, which has a very poetic title and looks reminiscent of a leaf. However, it can also be seen as an entirely abstract form: its ability to rotate invites viewers to see it from completely different vantage points with ever-changing contours and plays of light and shadow.
