Flüsterbrücke / Whisper Bridge

Two rounded bright orange dishes stand across from each other on the banks of the Emscher. Together, they form the Whisper Bridge, which invites visitors to communicate from one side of the bank to the other. Words that are whispered into the dish on one side can easily be understood 60 meters away at the other side, as the artist has facilitated optimal sound transmission with his sculpture.
Fascinated by the phenomenon that he had first observed in the vaults of a monastery, artist Jan Bormann developed this imaginary bridge by using steel dishes from the Afflerbach Bödenpresserei to transport the sound. These are the last steel sheets that were manufactured here on the former Phoenixstahlgelände before the plant was closed in 2010.
