Granit gespalten / Split Granite
This sculpture by Ulrich Rückriem is a monolithic granite block. The sculptor’s process entails selecting the stone and determining the proportions while still at the quarry. Ulrich Rückriem is not interested in altering the stone according to his own ideas, but instead striving to express its existing characteristics through minimalist interventions.
The artist used stonemason tools to create a serrated vertical edge, as well as three horizontal rows of drilled holes that divide the stone into segments. The first row is close to the ground, creating a low sort of pedestal. The remaining rows separate the stone, so that there are three almost cube-shaped blocks stacked on top of each other on the pedestal. Through these markings, the stone is transformed from a raw material into a sculpture without losing any of its natural force.
