Granite
Ulrich Rückriem’s artistic approach is rooted in his training as a stonemason and journeyman at the Cologne Dombauhütte. As a sculptor, he combines the traditional material of stone with modern forms, creating works that are reminiscent of minimal or process art. Instead of working in a studio, Rückriem works on site at the quarry, where he not only selects and removes stone, but also splits and cuts it. The resulting geometric forms reveal his method of dividing and reassembling the granite. The markings left behind from his intervention are emphasized rather than hidden. Flush-mounted to the ground on the garden terrace, the combination of archaic and modern elements in Rückriem’s work interact with Mies van der Rohe’s cubic forms of architecture and Richard Serra’s nearby sculpture.
