Große (liegende) Zylinderskulptur II / Large (Reclining) Cylinder Sculpture II

The Museum Ostwall in the Dortmunder U has expanded into the public space surrounding it and integrated representative sculptural works from the 1970s and 1980s into the park, which are the last remnants commemorating the former location of the Museum on Ostwall.
These include Heinz Günther Prager’s “Große Zylinderskulptur II,” which has a counter piece in the “Große Zylinderskulptur I” in the park of Schloss Morsbroich and was created in 1981. As early as 1971, Prager created analytical formal systems consisting of no more than a few geometrical elements such as rectangles, circles and cylinders. In 1979/80 he began to develop large, heavy so-called ground sculptures that lay flat on the ground without a plinth and thus invited viewers to put themselves in relation to them. Even though the artist has reduced his repertoire to a few abstract basic forms, the human scale, physical and sensual experiences like carrying and bearing burdens, standing and lying, balance and movement in space, are important elements in his oeuvre, which he also explored in drawings and theoretical writings.
