Große Zylinder-Skulptur I / Large Cylinder Sculpture I
Heinz-Günter Prager’s sculpture consists of a steel cylinder with one rectangular plate resting on top of it, while a similar plate cuts almost halfway through its diameter. The two plates seem to fix the cylinder in its location, with one as a weight and the other as an incision. In his sculptures, which are based on basic geometric elements, the artist always addresses the viewer’s relationship to the work.
The fact that the massive steel elements are set in a delicate balance without any visible anchoring gives the sculpture a slightly unsettling effect, posing the questions: Will the construction hold? How is the balance maintained? These questions already increase attentiveness and serve as the foundaton for further analysis of the surfaces and structure.
