Großer Kopf, schwebend / Large Head, Floating

If this sculpture did not refer to the human body as its starting point in the title, it could be seen as entirely abstract. Set on a square base plate, a tilted pyramid rises as the “neck” or “shoulder” of the large rounded rectangle that represents the head. The forms seem to float weightlessly above the ground, frozen in a falling movement, so that the contrast to the actual weight and mass of the form could not be greater. “The contrasting coupling of rudimentary form, static appearance, mutability and incompleteness constitute the essential criterion of quality in Franz Bernhard’s sculptural work – a mirror of human existence in the figurative sense.” (Iserlohn.de)

The acquisition of this sculpture for the City of Iserlohn was made possible by a sale from the city’s art collection and generous support from the citizens. Created in 2007, it has been installed on the city’s station square since 2012.
