Hommage an Josef Albers / Homage to Josef Albers
Josef Albers’s Homage to the Square series of paintings was used as the basis for the design of the Museum Quadrat in Bottrop – museum “square” in English. Located in the museum park, Erwin Heerich’s sculpture Homage to Josef Albers simultaneously makes reference to the Bauhaus artist, the location, and the perfect geometric shape.
The five-part steel made of African granite is atypical in Erwin Heerich’s work, as the artist otherwise typically prefers cardboard or local stone. It has a circular disc at the bottom, three different segments of a circle stacked on top of it, and a perfect cube finishing it off at the top. The circular forms gradually develop in a sort of monument to the square as the central shape in Albers’s work.
