A thirty-meter tall light sculpture is positioned atop a mining heap known as Großes Holz in the town of Bergkamen. The sculpture consists of a steel pillar with a white coating that was equipped with rows of LED lights spaced roughly 10 centimeters apart. The vertical lines of the LED tracks make the work look like a light column with fine grooves.
Integrated into the circuitry of the city lights, the pillar shines at full force with the onset of dusk. The sculpture is programmed to pulse, rhythmically transitioning from bright to dark to bright again.
The landmark sculpture Impulse represents the memory of a time when mining was still flourishing and the mine in Berkamen was still actively involved in coal production. It is a monument to the miners of Bergkamen and a memorial for all miners worldwide. At the same time, the artwork is understood as a symbol of a post-mining era.
