Jüdischer Gedenkstein / Jewish Memorial Stone

Ulrich Rückriem’s monolith is a meaningful work of art and memorial. The gray-brown enclosure surrounding the inscribed tablets is unprocessed and shows the natural materiality of the stone. The drill holes and saw markings above the tablets denote the roof of the enclosure and illustrate how it was produced. However, these interventions don’t reshape the stone, but instead uncover the material’s natural force. In this way, the work has a sensory presence that is appropriate for a memorial to the suffering of the Jewish people of Neuss.
