Keilskulptur / Wedge Sculpture
Ulrich Rückriem’s tower-like Wedge Sculpture stands in the square in front of the Solingen Rathaus and serves as an archaic-looking counterpart to the technical aesthetic of the building. The artist joined together two wedge-shaped blocks of Anröchter dolomite, so that a narrow gap between the stones forms a visual axis from the front steps to the building entrance. Both stones are wider at the base and taper upwards in a triangular shape. The sculpture takes on the form a powerful rising entity and is reminiscent of a prehistoric monument. Above all, however, the lively color and structure of the stone are what determine the sculpture’s overall effect.
The sculpture was donated to the city of Solingen on the behalf of the Solinger Kunstverein with the support of numerous citizens.
