Klanghaus Arnsberg / Sound House Arnsberg

Two artistic works were created at the substation on Möhnepforte: a facade design by Berlin artist Nicolai Angelov and a sound installation by Viennese artist Heribert Friedl. Through these interventions, the centrally located public garden was turned into a meeting place that reflects the surrounding architecture and nature.

In his facade design, Nicolai Angelov draws from the neighboring timbered house. Its black beams and white sections can also be seen as dark lines on a while background. Along the exterior of the substation, Angelov incorporated green diagonal lines that cross a continuous central line. The composition is defined by symmetry and tension-filled geometric design, drawing new, continuously changing constellations when seen through differing perspectives while circling the building. In this way, the image composition creates a relationship to its surroundings, as well as the function of the substation and its electrical voltage.

The sound installation here was produced by the audio/cd label nvo, which was founded by Heribert Friedl and Raphael Moser in 2005. Most of the compositions start with silence or barely perceptible sounds. Then, the sounds gradually become more audible and are varied, analyzed, and reinterpreted – until they subside and face away again in the end. The installation at Sound House Arnsberg is a roughly 70-minute-long compilation of nvo artists and musicians that work with new electronic music, whether it be digital computer music, improvisation, or pure field recordings (including works by Steve Roden, Roel Meelkop, Heribert Friedl, Richard Chartier, Bernhard Günter, Richard Garet, Tomas Phillips, Will Montgomery, Jos Smolders, Michael Vorfeld, Philip Samartzis, Asmus Tietchens, Shinkei, Luigi Turra, Dean King and Will Montgomery, among others). The design makes reference to the house’s orientation as a public platform for sound art.
