Komposition mit Keil / Composition with Wedge
The former rector of the Akademie der Bildenden Künste München was first a visual arts fellow at the Märkische Kulturkonferenz in 1978/79. The sculpture Composition with Wedge comes from this time. It consists of a raw granite cube with visible drill holes that were left behind from the quarry.
The artist divided and reassembled the massive rectangular block in such a way that – despite minimal changes to its natural appearance – a complex interplay between the resulting forms emerged. The front of the horizontal block was divided into two squares. In turn, the squares were then each divided into two L-shapes. These L’s were cut smaller in one of the squares, leaving room for a wedge with a square base.
Inserted into that space, the wedge is not quite flush with the surface of the sculpture, creating an additional component in the balanced relationship between inside and outside, heavy and light, the part and the whole.
