Lichtsäule / Light Column

Popularly known as the “telecommunications cactus,” Günther Uecker’s sculpture looks like a combination of his well-known nail artworks and light installations, which were created in the course of his work as a member of the ZERO artist group. The work is a tall, dark-colored column with 294 100-watt spotlights installed at regular intervals. These lights are mounted on short tubes, which are reminiscent of Uecker’s nails and give the column the spiky appearance that earned it its nickname. The circuits are programmed to create varied and dynamic plays of light and shadow. With the spotlights creating a rhythmic, pulsating exchange, The Light Column’s location in front of the former telecommunications center (Fernmeldeamt 1) makes reference to the building’s function as an interface for communication.
