Lightning Blue

Tilman Küntzel’s fountain installation establishes a visual and acoustic link between the urban hinterland and the inner city. The artist used sound and visual recordings of the hydroelectric station located on the river Ruhr to redesign an existing urban fountain. The latter was restored and a water groove was added that leads to a cylindrical outlet covered by a glass pane. The outlet contains several loudspeakers and a video beamer projecting the images of water recorded at the Fröndenberg hydroelectric power station on the underside of the glass. The loudspeakers play sounds of flowing from the station.
The fountain was realised as part of the project “Hellweg – ein Lichtweg” (Hellweg – A Path of Light), jointly organised by the municipalities of the Hellweg region, Bergkamen, Fröndenberg, Kamen and Lippstadt, and supported by the state of NRW.
