Mahnmal / Memorial
This sculpture is an early artistic memorial to the victims of National Socialism. The cast bronze figure of a girl stands atop a basalt lava pedestal. In her left hand, the young girl is holding an oak branch that is depicted as a relief along her dress. In raised script, the pedestal bears the following dedication: “To the victims of injustice and violence.”
At the suggestion of Viersen’s mayor Hubert Voots, the city’s cultural affairs committee invited artists Hans Wimmer (München), Zoltan Székessy (Düsseldorf), Kurt Lehmann (Hannover), and Johannes Tiefert (Ratingen) to participate in a competition to build a monument to the victims of National Socialism.
Székessy’s memorial was selected and is currently situated in the Casinogarten behind the gymnasium of the Anne-Frank-Schule, which corresponds to the artist’s originally intended location.
