Memoria Mundi

In artist duo Anne and Patrick Poirier’s work, the most important theme is cultural memory, but it is also paired with forgetting. Their experience of war-torn France, as well as their interest in antiquity and other cultures, has influenced their work, which appears to have a close relationship to an archeological survey.
In an overgrown former quarry in Neandertal, they have tried to capture the memory of the world in an image. It is made up of two elements with some distance between them, incorporating the surrounding landscape. Resting on the flat ground, one of the objects is an oversized human brain made from a large piece of limestone from the Neandertal quarry. As such, this is the memory carved in stone, but it will also change and fade as the stone becomes overgrown with lichen and moss over time.
The second object can be found a bit further in the background: there is another boulder, but this one was hit by an arrow made of shiny reflective stainless steel. The point is stuck in the stone and the shaft projects upwards from there. If the first object stands for preserving memory, this one symbolizes the sudden and unforeseen occurrence, the surprising moment, the present experience. Preserving, forgetting, and experience are brought together to create what the artists call Memoria Mundi.
