Modell Wuppertal / Model Wuppertal

Architecture and photography are interwoven in Carsten Giese’s works for public spaces. His large-format photos reflect the existing architectural conditions as well as the principles and possibilities of architectural photography as such, while in turn transforming the space. One of his early installations within this group of works is “Modell Wuppertal.” A large-scale photograph was mounted on the inside of the window facade of one of the university blocks’ entrance halls. It extends across all floors but does not cover the glass completely. Since the photographs show models of stairs and other architectural elements, they merge with the actual building, especially when viewed from outside, to create new architectural situations that combine real building and image, that oscillate between reality and imagination. “This model-like re-organisation of the architecture is an attempt to give the university – a specific place of intellectual debate, of experimentation, of modelling – an adequate image.” (C. Gliese)
