Münsteranerin / Woman from Münster
As a semi-public space, the inner courtyard of the LWL Museum offers a suitable place to display Pipilotti Rist’s first permanent outdoor video work, which is projected on the long wall after dark. Commissioned as a donation by the Freunde des Museums, the Swiss artist created a dreamy sequence in intense colours whose blurred contours make it look like an oversized soap bubble. The video shows flowers and plants, human bodies and geographical footage composed in a floating dance-like choreography. The artist compares the flowers with the works of art in the museum, “which the female citizens of Münster have agreed are valuable, important, or beautiful. Such agreements provide rest and tranquillity to our brain. The same happens when we view and value plants. By showing them in continuous movement, though, the plants also represent the passers-by most of whom are rooted in Münster.” She continues: “By visiting the museum together we pollinate each other spiritually and new flowers will bloom.”
