New Star

The name New Star makes reference to the appearance of a supernova (SN1987A) near the Milky Way in February 1987. A supernova is the sudden bright illumination of a star at the end of its lifetime, which is caused by an explosion that destroys the star itself. The star’s brightness increases by millions or even billions, becoming as bright as an entire galaxy for a short time.
“In an extreme way, supernovae illustrate the temporality that underlies the seemingly infinite cosmic world. (…) Di Suvero’s sculpture is painted bright red. In addition to its sculptural and constructional dimension, it also takes on the character of a colored signal, which functions simultaneously as a moment of movement in place.”
