Untitled

This work serves as a counterpart to Wilfried Hagebölling’s sculpture on Brunowall. The essential difference between the two sculptures is the material that was used: while the artist prefers working with steel, he used local green Anröchter sandstone here. The stone was requested by the Internationales Bildhauer-Symposium, which took place in the city in 1969, 1973 and 1982, 1994 and 2001. This work was created for the second symposium in 1973. Like the sculpture along Brunowall, the internal structure of this complex construction of nested forms is dominated by right angles. This work also sits diagonally, only touching the ground with a few points. Two opposing diagonals are also prominent here, and each draws an upward line of force that points out above the sculpture into the surrounding space. Although both works have these corresponding essential compositional elements, the execution seems blockier and more massive in sandstone, while the steel sculpture seems more permeable and finer. Compared, the two sculptures show how the properties of the material determine the overall effect of a work.
