The square stele has been a common sculptural form since antiquity. It has been used for monuments, inscription stones, and grave stones throughout art history, and also serves as the basis for numerous autonomous abstract sculptures. Ulrich Rückriem repeatedly returns to the form of the stele in his work.
In its archaic simplicity, it is particularly suited to express the characteristics of the raw stone, as well as the artist’s minimal interventions. In this sculpture, the stone is preserved just as it was when it was found in the quarry. The sculpture is only structured by the marks that were left behind when the stone was taken from the quarry. The result is a massive monument that changes in appearance based on the wind and weather.
