Erich Reusch won a competition to design the triangular space between the Rathaus, Christuskirche, and Bildungs- und Verwaltungszentrum. Circular forms were the basis for his design concept: A recessed circular zone is located at the center of the space and several elevated circles serve as places to sit. Water sprays from the center and flows outward towards the edges of the circular fountains, which are flush with the ground and commonly referred to as “wet eyes.” All of the design elements are made of the same or similar material to the surrounding paving stones, giving the space a uniform overall effect. The artwork doesn’t stand out here, but instead integrates harmonically into the calm overall design. It doesn’t need to sit atop a pedestal and be admired, but instead presents itself for self-explanatory interaction and even practical use.
