Untitled

Wilfried Hagebölling, who currently lives in Paderborn, often prefers to construct his sculptures out of Corten steel, which develops a rust-brown patina when exposed to the elements. He has created numerous public sculptures, most of which are directly related to their respective locations.
However, this work has already effectively been installed in several locations. The sculpture consists of three steel elements: one rectangular plate rests flat on the ground; the next has one corner on the ground with a vertical irregular trapezoid welded to it; the third has one corner bent upright at a right angle.
When looking at the vertical elements, the viewer automatically incorporates the trapezoid as part of another rectangle, imagining the missing corner embedded into the ground; likewise, the triangle could be seen as the corner of a rectangle poking up out of the ground. In this way, the artist turns the viewer into his accomplice in order to create the image of a powerfully dynamic construction that manages to grow beyond its own dimensions.
Three additional public works by Wilfried Hagebölling can be found in Paderborn:
- Untitled large sculpture, 1973–1978, concrete, 10 x 10 x 6 m, Sportzentrum Maspernplatz.
- Untitled, 1981, steel, up to 7.5 m tall, at the former telecommunications building (Telekom today),
Rathenaustraße. - Tür / Door, 1980/1981, Corten steel, 5.7 m tall, on the grounds of the Universität Paderborn.
