With great community involvement, the reconstruction of Bonn’s Beethovenhalle was continued after World War II in the same location as the destroyed original. Architect Siegfried Wolske’s new hall was completed in 1959 and has since served as an outstanding example of the “organic construction” of the post war period. The architect saw the hall as a Gesamtkunstwerk, to which not only music and architecture, but also the visual arts made their contribution.
Hans Uhlmann took part in the exhibition Berliner Künstler der Gegenwart, which was held for the building’s opening. Displayed as if it were on a stage, his abstract sculpture has been located on the Rhine-facing terrace since 1959. The work’s diagonal lines create an explosive dynamic against the dominant surrounding horizontal and vertical architectural lines in this location.
Starting from a triangular center, metal elements extend downward and give the sculpture a powerful stance. There are additional metal elements that extend diagonally upwards and point outward, spreading like wings or as a celebratory reaction to the music.
