Pipeline, Linearbeschleuniger am Hang / Pipeline, Linear Accelerator on the slope
Multidimensionality, space, and time are the main themes in Rolf Nolden’s work. Engaging with Albert Einstein’s theory of relativity, artist Theo van Doesburg found that the simplest representation of the fourth dimension was a diagonal across a surface. The sculpture Pipeline can be understood as a sort of visualization of this notion.
It consists of a segmented pipe welded to a steel beam, resting on the sloping terrain. Maintaining the same diameter and spacing throughout, the individual sections of tube become increasingly shorter. The resulting sense of accelerating rhythm makes it seem like a temporal dimension has cut through the spatial dimension.
