Platzgestaltung / Plaza Design

Gerlinde Beck created a symbiotic relationship between sculpture and spatial design with her work in front of the Witten Kulturforum. Drawing from the cubic architecture of the hall behind it, the work consists of an arrangement of six of the artist’s “shell figures” with “emerging bands” that shape the space.
The “shell figures” are tall stainless steel tubes with cut outs that expose their signal red interiors. Two of these pillars have concrete cores that are painted in the same orange-red color; the concrete emerges from the openings, taking on a ribbon-like form that continues throughout the square in individual blocks.
The blocks, which are lit at night and can be used for seating, bring together architecture, sculpture, spatial design, and path orientation. Moreover, they actively engage the viewer, who can use them as benches in the communication space they create.
