Position im Schwerpunkt / Position in Gravitational Center

“Nestler’s sculpture consists of two different sized 30-cm-thick steel elements that form a 180-cm-tall and 240-cm-wide ellipse when combined. These rounded segments are balanced upright, so that they level off at their respective centers of gravity.

The final position in which each of the ellipse segments stands has changed based on rules of gravity. The fragments, which have a shared center of gravity when combined as a complete ellipse, now seek out different positions as a result of their changed physical conditions.

Nestler is particularly interested in gravitational equilibrium. In his work, he often creates a fragile interplay of forces with iron rods, joints and hinges, or massive balanced blocks.

This sculpture by Wolfgang Nestler brings a meaningful aspect of artistic work to the Skulpturensammlung Viersen. It shows us that rational approaches can do more than oppose nature as a contrasting element (see Erwin Heerich’s Monument in Viersen), but are also capable of incorporating natural conditions as an intrinsic part of a work’s composition. In this way, such approaches can playfully bring together the abstract and the natural, as well as the logical/theoretical and the immediate power of nature.”
