QUREFE AEKYAD

The title of this sculpture already suggests that the artist is interested in the creation of words, signs, and symbols. Just as the title is a newly invented word, the sculpture is a newly created sign.

Starting with a preoccupation with the shapes of letters, Douglas Abdell developed calligraphic symbols that were then embodied as three-dimensional forms in his sculptures. Here, three vertical lines have been joined together to create a stepped structure.

Despite the massive sculptural appearance, the forms are not quite even or geometric, maintaining associations with a hand-drawn archaic symbol.
