Raumbeschreibung / Spatial Definition

Using Peter Könitz’s design and model, employees of the company Friedrich-Wilhelms-Hütte produced the sculpture Spatial Definition to celebrate the city’s 175th anniversary and donated it to the residents.

The sculpture depicts a life-sized figure of a man holding two long iron bars that cross behind his neck; they extend far out in front of him until they reach the ground. The bars are positioned so that they form two legs of a right-angled isosceles triangle, with the tip being supported by the figure.

The base of the triangle is missing and the viewer must imagine it complete. Instead, the ends of the bars mark points on the outline of a stone circle around the figure. As a sort of human compass, the figure stands in the center of the space and defines it with the outstretched poles.
